One hope I have when thinking about working with children and families who come from diverse background is that they always find acceptance where they are. Since diversity is something that should be celebrated, I hope that children and families are always able to celebrate and share their diversity with other and that through that sharing they find acceptance.
One goal I would like to set for the early childhood field related to diversity is that educators take the time and stress the importance of including families in the education of young children. This partnership will help educators, families, and children learn about one another and share about differences and ways that they can make the world a better place.
Thank you to all of my colleagues who have taken the time to read and comment on my blog. I appreciate your time, suggestions, and encouragement! Good luck in your next stage of this journey!
Hi Robin,
ReplyDeleteI too, hope that every child and family can feel accepted and welcome in not just their classroom and school, but in society overall. I think most biases are created by media sources and rather than celebrating diversity as you said it should be, they pick apart specific details of diversity and turn them into negatives. It is our job as educators to debunk theories media sources exert and show children that diversity is one of the most beautiful aspects of life. I think it is so important for families to be included in this process as well because one of children's main learning sources is family. Great insight, Robin!
Fantastic post, Robin. I definitely agree and understand how important it is to include families into the classroom. This course has definitely taught me the importance and value of inclusion. I absolutely want to include all my families and have each child represented. This course has been a major eye opener in that regard.
ReplyDeleteHi Robin,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your goal about the importance of families and the partnerships that can develop with them. Our interactions with them should be circular with the recognition that we "both" are teachers to each other. Being able to model this for young children will help to instill a sense of knowing that they are valued. More importantly, it helps them also to recognize that they should be respected, and if they are not, then something is wrong. Children deserve respect and value, it is a right and not a privilege.
All the best to you in the future. I feel hopeful for the future knowing that you and our fellow classmates are moving toward a more just society.
